An Amazing Letter

My friend referred me to an amazing site: Letters of Note. "Correspondence Deserving of a Wider Audience". The most poignant I've seen so far was this one:

via

Firefly Hill
Port Maria
Jamaica B.W.I.

Oh, darling,

Your letter filled me with such a lot of emotions, the predominant one being rage that you should allow yourself to be so humiliated and made so unhappy by a situation that really isn't worthy of you. I loathe to think of you apologizing and begging forgiveness and humbling yourself. I don't care if you did behave badly for a brief moment, considering all the devotion and loving you have given out during the last five years, you had a perfect right to. The only mistake was not to have behaved a great deal worse a long time ago. The aeroplane journey sounds a nightmare to me.

It is difficult for me to wag my finger at you from so very far away particularly as my heart aches for you but really darling you must pack up this nonsensical situation once and for all. It is really beneath your dignity, not your dignity as a famous artist and a glamourous star, but your dignity as a human, only too human, being. Curly is attractive, beguiling, tender and fascinating, but he is not the only man in the world who merits those delightful adjectives...Do please try to work out for yourself a little personal philosophy and DO NOT, repeat DO NOT be so bloody vulnerable. To hell with God damned "L'Amour." It always causes far more trouble than it is worth. Don't run after it. Don't court it. Keep it waiting off stage until you're good and ready for it and even then treat it with the suspicious disdain that it deserves...I am sick to death of you waiting about in empty houses and apartments with your ears strained for the telephone to ring. Snap out of it, girl! A very brilliant writer once said (could it have been me?) "Life is for the living." Well that is all it is for, and living DOES NOT consist of staring in at other people's windows and waiting for crumbs to be thrown to you. You've carried on this hole in corner, overcharged, romantic, unrealistic nonsense long enough.

Stop it Stop it Stop it. Other people need you...Stop wasting your time on someone who only really says tender things to you when he's drunk...

Unpack your sense of humor, and get on with living and ENJOY IT.

Incidentally, there is one fairly strong-minded type who will never let you down and who loves you very much indeed. Just try to guess who it is. XXXX. Those are not romantic kisses. They are un-romantic. Loving "Goose-Es."

Your devoted "Fernando de Lamas"
How often have we seen this same scenario played out among girlfriend after girlfriend? I find myself running out of patience, yet so many of us fall into this trap.

How do you help yourself when you find yourself in this position?

How do you help your friends?

Flea Market and Slumber Party

This weekend I made my way down to NoVA for a sleepover with some of my favorite girlfriends. We decided to surprise my friend Jori by bringing her sister in from Ohio for the occasion. Jori had no clue that her sister was coming.

When Rachel and I got to Jori's condo, I stopped the car and Rachie got into the trunk. I proceeded to pick up Jori and drive her to the front office of her building for a parking permit. After getting the permit, we parked the car and I asked Jori if she wouldn't mind grabbing my bag from the trunk.

She opened the trunk to find Rachie chilling there,

shrieked,
leapt backward at least 5 feet
and
THREW her phone at Rachie.

Surprised doesn't even begin to describe her reaction.

I had planned to get a picture of the scene, but was laughing so hard I couldn't even breathe, let alone capture the moment.

Needless to say, she was 100% shocked, and 100% thrilled.

Jori, Rachie, Loo, Cec, Mo
After staying up WAY TOO LATE, we woke up bright and early for the Arlington Flea Market. Four stories of a parking garage full of junk hidden treasures?

Yes, please!

I had this exact art kit as a kid.

You'll be proud to know that I kept my promise. Despite several adorable finds, I refrained from purchasing any clothing, shoes or accessories. It hurt my heart and took some serious self control, but I survived! I did end up with an orchid, an adorable pot for said orchid, and a screwdriver with a pretty floral handle.

Do you have any favorites you've found at flea markets?

Tell Me About It: Week 2

Sarah and her beau, Reid might make one of my favorite couples ever. Both of them are such a great time individually, but together, they make life fantastic for each other and everyone who has the pleasure of spending time with them.
I thought it would be interesting to hear from both of them, and am so grateful they both chose to participate!
Isn't it fun to hear both sides of the story?

Disclaimer: You will likely cry. I did.
Sarah
To start, I would like to proclaim that I may be one of the least romantic people in the country. No matter how hard Reid tries to be suave, or overly sweet, or anything bordering on "romantic," I laugh uncontrollably

While I am certainly emotional, I am miserable at being sentimental. It is not in my genetic code. I think it stems from childhood. For instance, on birthdays, Reid and his family send each other sweet, thoughtful cards with personal notes saying how much they care about one another. My family sends the ones with pictures of old men farting and/or squirrels making obligatory nut jokes.

Still, even with my missing romantic DNA, he seems to love me anyway and does sweet things all the time.

A few months ago I was in one of those stress spirals--the apartment was a mess, work was insane, some portion of my family was driving me crazy, I had no clean underwear, and zero time to fix any of it. Reid came home to find me speaking loudly on the phone while picking bits of aluminum foil out of the carpet (remnants of our dog's garbage-can feast from earlier that day). Not truly comprehending the "stress spiral," he waits for me to get off the phone and, in his most upbeat voice, begins to tell me that his mom is coming over.
 In half an hour.
For dinner.

I did not take the news well.

"The apartment is a mess!"
"We don't have any food!"
"I have too much work to do!"

"THERE IS ALUMINUM FOIL EVERYWHERE!!"

Reid quickly assessed the situation and saw it was a no win--I think he finally saw the crazy in my eyes. After I ranted a bit he told me I shouldn't worry. He would take his mom to dinner solo and let me be.

So he left.

And I stewed a bit.

Then, about a half an hour later, he came home...with pizza, red wine, and flowers. Anyone who knows me, knows those are my favorite things in the world--in that order. It turns out he had called his mom, told her it wasn't a good night, and immediately went to the store.

I completely didn't expect any of it.

After I put the flowers in a vase, we sat down and had one of those great, long leisurely dinners. We just talked, ate, and laughed about how bad our dog was. It was simple, perfect, and absolutely what I needed.
I feel like we generally treat each other well; however, this night, when I was about to go over the edge

--and I wasn't being very nice about it--

He really made the effort. So it stands out.

And just gives me one more reason to be really happy I found him.

Reid

My girlfriend Sarah believes she is without true "romanticism." Sure she can be loving and she always says very nice things to me, and sympathizes with me when I need it, but when it comes to romanticism she believes she is devoid of it.
Upon hearing this I was initially inclined to agree with her.
After all, she can't have me near her neck or ear without giggling uncontrollably and her immediate response any time I want to stand outside and look at the stars is typically, "I'm cold, let's go inside."
Still, over our 4 years together Sar's been far more romantic than she actually thinks.

My definition of romance extends beyond our most polished intimate moments.

Sar and I have had plenty of wonderful dinners together, and I've surprised her with flowers on occasion.

That stuff's easy when you're talking romance.

To me our most romantic moments are the ones that are more unexpected, like the one she chose to write about, or the moments that are far more difficult than buying flowers or going out to dinner.

383294_582247355623_115200707_32260273_718503840_n

When my dad died about two and a half years ago it was the most difficult thing I had ever dealt with.

It was very unexpected and he had been one of the two most important people in my life.

I'd never dealt with a death like that, and a lot of responsibilities fell to me to help prepare for memorial services and help my mom emotionally as best as I could.

Sar had known my dad for about a year and a half and they had always gotten along great. Her favorite memories of him always included her walking through the front door and him boisterously going about his business in the kitchen, yelling at political pundits on the TV or watching a game. She enjoyed his goofy nature and says it is something she sees in me all of the time.

Because Sar had immediately become so close to my small family she became as much a part of the process of helping my mom after his death as I was.

She helped sort through belongings and files, helped set up the memorial services and even did up the entire program for the big service we had that November in Connecticut, where I grew up.

She was also my biggest emotional outlet, the one person I went to so I could vent and release my anger/frustration/heartbreak.

About a week before the Connecticut service Sarah became extremely ill, and was exhausted emotionally, mentally and physically.

Now, Sar gets sick a lot, but I actually don't think I've ever seen her worse than she was during that week.
Still, on top of being sick, she was going into work and attending grad school. Add to it that she was finalizing the memorial program and dealing with tons of edits from my mother (who is a notorious perfectionist) and you get an idea of how crazy her life was.

I, on the other hand, was leaving her a couple of days before the service to head up to Connecticut to make certain arrangements and to do the set up. Sar was left with the task of not only polishing the program, but getting it made up at Kinkos, picking up our friends Sarah and Kyle outside of DC and driving the 4 to 5 hours from Alexandria, VA to Connecticut the morning of the service.

To top it all off, she was as sick as she had been all week during the drive up on the day of the service.

So what did Sarah do throughout the week and into the weekend?

She never complained once.

She did everything that was asked of her and more.

She drove the entire 4 to 5 hour stretch to Connecticut (she hates driving) and joined my family for a pre-service gathering amongst ourselves before sitting through hours of emotional speeches about my father and the party afterwards.

She held my hand throughout, comforted me constantly and generally just operated in the background helping in any way that she could.

Oh, and she looked stunning the whole time, in spite of barely being able to eat or drink.

Finally, at about midnight, she quietly asked me to help her get back to the house we were staying at so she could get some rest, all the while doing everything she could to not distract from the service or "Irish wake" type party afterwards.
My point is this; a lot of what I describe above doesn't necessarily fit in with what we think of when we say "romantic."

We think roses and chocolates.

We think of a nice compliment or candle lit dinner.

We think picking up a surprise pizza and bringing home flowers.

I'm thankful Sar thinks so highly of me for doing "romantic" things that are honestly the simplest parts of a relationship.

Yet, it's what she did that was so unique and so difficult.

In doing all of these things out of love for my family and for me, she is by far the most romantic person in our relationship, and I'm very lucky to have her.

Weekend Wedding

This weekend, Stephanie from Complicated Questions and Simple Answers married her best friend. I've known Steph for years, and it was a treat to celebrate this moment with her. I love watching father/daughter dances at weddings, and was able to catch a gorgeous picture of her with her papa bear.

Steph and J got married at the Crofton Country club and everything was decorated beautifully. Because we've known each other for so long, her wedding also acted as a bit of a reunion for all of our childhood friends.

I added one of my Whippy Cakes to my dress to switch things up a bit.
What do you think?

Saturday, we went to visit our friends on their farm. I took a ton of pictures, so I'll have to share those tomorrow. What did you all do this weekend?

Journey Forward: Describe Yourself

Hm. This Journey Forward assignment is difficult! I could tell you what I look like, or what I believe. I could tell you my occupation or my location. I could tell you my loves and hates, my likes and dislikes, my age or my strengths and weaknesses.

I could tell you that part of my scalp is currently a terrible shade of orange due to a stupid 2 week hair rinse thing I did...

Or I could ask the people who know me well to tell you! I asked them to give me one word, and here's what they came up with...

So this describes the wonderful side of me - I promise there's an equally not as wonderful side that they neglected to mention :) We'll leave that for another day though!

Don't forget to check out the other posts  in the Journey Forward challenge!

Entertaining this Weekend

This weekend will be full of entertaining.

My good buddy, Boston, is coming to town and we're going to celebrate!

1,2,3,4,5

Thought I'd share some fun snack ideas I'm thinking of trying. I figured I'd switch it up a bit from the more traditional Super Bowl weekend snacks.

The only thing I didn't include in the images above, are the Jalapeno Poppers I'm planning on making. If they turn out well, I'll post photos and the recipe later!

Are you getting excited for the weekend?

Nail Bling

In college, my roommate literally hid all of our nail polish from me.
She did it because she loves me and always wants what's best for me.

Also, I think I drove her crazy.

You see, I have this problem...
I'll get so excited about painting my nails, and spend forever getting them just right. Once I layer on all of the coats, I settle myself in to wait for that perfect moment when they'll be dry.
And then, something terrible will happen...
like, my nose will itch,
or I'll decide it's too hot in the room and I need to take off layers,
or I'll realize I've been drinking too much water and need to run to the loo immediately.
Inevitably, I destroy my nails, before they have the opportunity to dry.

Jori would try to mandate sitting still times for me to paint my nails, but I still would fail!

Let's be honest, they never stood a chance.

When they invented quick-dri nail polish, I thought, this is it! I can finally have pretty nails!

Who would have thought "quick-dri" really means 5 minutes?!
Quick, my rear!!
Then, OPI brilliantly came up with the Rapid Dry Spray. As of yet, this invention has come the closest to saving my nails from destruction, but more often than not, I still find a way to smudge them.
Okay, it might have something to do with the fact that I tend to be a bit overzealous when it comes to how many coats I layer on there.
Last night, I did the unimaginable. I waited to paint my nails until we started a movie. I sat still for the ENTIRE DRYING TIME. That's right. I successfully pulled off a home mani. I think the awesome glitter motivated me. Turned out pretty well, if I do say so myself!

10 Day Challenge: Day 2

Day 2 of the Challenge! Nine loves.

These will not be any type of particular order.

9. My family:

As much as they drive me crazy, it really is a blessing to come from such a large family. I have such a network of support, whether I want it or not. :)

My mom is one of 5. My dad is one of 4. I'm one of 4. There are 16 cousins on one side of the family and 11 on the other side.  SO MANY PEOPLE.

It's fun too, now that we're older, the age differences don't seem to matter as much.

And the newest addition to the fam:

Vivi Kitty

8. Water:
For years, I swam on swim team year round.
One of my winter coaches dubbed me with the most awful nickname, Reba, which has stuck, to this day.

Sailing also took over a solid portion of our summers down at Indian Landing.

Most people don't get the Landing. It's sort of a time capsule.

A lot of our parents grew up there, and we've all taken our turns working there.

I spent a summer coaching swim team with Bree & Richard.

It's a boat club, not a yacht club or a marina.

There is a pool, tennis courts, basketball and woods to explore. We spent every summer there.

Every parent was everyone else's parent.

When people ask how I met some of my oldest, closest friends, they are shocked that I didn't meet them in school. To this day, I won't give up my membership.

7. Bright Colors:
Yes, we had an inflatable pool full of play place balls at our house in college.
No explanation necessary.

6. Sequins & Sparkles

5. Storms:
Specifically, that crazy still moment right before a storm.

4. Travel adventures:

3. Books:
The smell of old books.
The way you can get lost in a novel.
Wandering through a library.
Challenging concepts and ideas to tackle.
I could get lost in here for hours.
2. Churches:

Old, elegant Churches with traditional liturgy.
I think my favorite so far is the Duomo in Siena
1. Crabs feasts and Beer:

What can I say? I'm a MD girl at heart!

China Food & Vino

Last night I got to hang out with my friend Jilly. Weeknights that aren't consumed with school, work, or homework have been pretty rare recently. It's so nice to have friends who are up for a midweek date in yoga pants and glasses.
I came to a conclusion a while back, and recently life has reinforced it. There are friends who can pick up exactly where they left off, no matter how much time passes in between visits. These friends are the friends who are there when you need them; who love you when life is crazy busy and you neglect them. I've concluded  these friends deserve a little extra love when you have a minute to spare. So, to those of you I've neglected recently, I love you and when I have a minute to spare, expect something fun.

Just thought I'd share some things that have inspired/made me happy me this week:
