10 Day Challenge: Day 10

Day 10: One Picture of Yourself.

I'm not a fan of this part of the challenge.

I picked this picture because it was taken during a tight and bright party we threw. Dancing makes me happier than most things do and bright colors come in close second. The night this was taken, we blasted great music and I danced with the girls for hours.

And with that, I've completed the 10 Day Challenge. Thanks for following along and leaving such sweet comments. Things will be back to normal around here shortly!

10 Day Challenge: Day 9

Day 9: Two Songs

These songs have been on my mind a lot recently:

Without You - Keith Urban

If I Wanted Someone - Dawes

10 Day Challenge: Day 8

Day 8: Three films.

"In a good shoe I wear a size six, but a seven feels so good I buy a size eight!"
"Here, hit this!"
"Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion."

This movie made me laugh and sob and laugh again. Such a classic.

"The fact that you're a sheriff is not germane to the situation..." "The GD Germans got nothin to do with it!"

"Honestly, if you're not willing to sound stupid, you don't deserve to be in love."

"You know what, I don't mind paying, but I hate the fact that you assume I'm paying. That's just...I mean, at least make a move! Like, make the reach for it or something!"

Once again, I'd like to include so many more! The Notebook, White Christmas, Across the Universe, Sweet Home Alabama, Emma, Die Hard, The Fifth Element, Pride and Prejudice, Thirteen Days, Gone With the Wind...this list goes on and on.

What are your favorites?

10 Day Challenge: Day 6

Day 6: Five Foods. This is the worst challenge ever. I love to eat. So much. These are just a few of my favorites. Also, just a disclaimer, I didn't include crabs because you should just assume based on previous readings that crabs and corn on the cob are my most favorite. I didn't want to be redundant by including them here!

Growing up, my parents had a rule that we were never allowed to say "I don't like" at the dinner table. We had to try everything at least once and finish the portion put on our plate. As a result, there is only one thing I absolute cannot eat: Olives.

I know it is a crime. People LOVE olives. Once though, my dad, who tends to be a pretty adventurous cook, ventured a little bit too far and tried to make an olive casserole. Let's just say, I'm not the only one in my family who no longer eats olives. In all fairness, that's the only thing he's ever made us eat that was actually bad.

So here is a brief selection of some of my most favorite foods!

Caprese Salad: By far, my most favorite summer food...so light and refreshing!
1
Fresh Seared Ahi Tuna: either blackened or coated in sesame
2
Gazpacho: my mom always made this for us in the summer with veggies from our garden. SO tasty.
3
This picture cheats a little bit because it shows two foods I adore: Lightly Steamed Asparagus and Seared Scallops
4
Fresh Oysters! We went to an oyster festival near my house and sampled a ton of oysters a couple weeks ago. It was a lot of fun.

If you ever make it to St. Mary's, they have an oyster shucking competition that will entertain the socks off of you!
5
Terrible picture quality, but Rockfish Bites are heaven. The best rockfish bites I've ever had, were made by Keith, the cook at Tall Timbers Marina in Tall Timbers, MD. He gets the rockfish from local fisherman and tosses it in some sort of amazing seasoning. I make a dipping sauce for them by mixing old bay into sour cream. It sounds gross, but it is taste bud bliss.

What are your most favorite foods? Do your favorites tend to change with the seasons or do they stay the same year round? Do you make your favorites well or do you have a person who makes them for you?

10 Day Challenge: Day 5

Day 5: 6 Places.

1: Bali
This summer, my best friend got married in Bali. It was such a beautiful island and well worth the travel.

2: Rothenburg, Germany
This town stole my heart. The architecture made you feel like you were in a fairy tale. While we were there, it started to snow and the snowflakes were beautiful and huge!
The Schneeballen (which translates as snowballs) desserts were amazing as well. My favorite was the chocolate one with a hazelnut nougat filling. So unbelievably delicious!
Schneeballen

3: In front of the Temple of Poseidon in Greece
Those little people in the middle are my mom and me. I think out of all the places I went in Greece, Mars Hill was probably my favorite because of the view. Normally, I would have chosen the waterfront location, but everything was so bare and rocky by the Temple of Poseidon. It felt desolate to me. I've heard that Santorini is breathtaking and next time I go to Greece, I hope to check it out.

4: Mars Hill

5: Venice, Italy
Venice was a really cool town. I wish we had spent more time there. There were so many beautiful glass art pieces there. I'd love to go back and take a boat out to the glass blowing factories.
6: Siena, Italy
I loved Siena. There were so many cafes with alfresco dining available. The roads in town were so narrow that many buses were unable to travel through.

Tell me about your travels! Where have you traveled? What is your favorite type of thing to do when you go adventuring?

10 Day Challenge: Day 4

Day 4. Seven wants!
Greenhouse overlooking the water - amazing.

Hammocks are the best. If it isn't hanging above water, this would be second best.

For now, I'll take any real closet over my stand alone wardrobe!

10 Day Challenge: Day 3

8. Things that go bump in the night!

If I am home alone (which luckily isn't too often) I can convince myself that every creak and bump in the night is an intruder. In high school, my dad converted one of the bays of our garage into a rec room for us. I had a sleepover out there with all of the girls one night. It was maybe 1 or 2am and we heard this THUMP, THUMP, THUMP. Then it sounded like someone was moving heavy furniture around in the attic above our heads. The exit from the rec room required walking through the other bay of the garage. We were too scared to do that in case someone came down from the attic and saw us.

Logically, we called the house phone with our cell phones.
No one answered.
Then we called each of my parents' cell phones
No one answered.
Then we called each of my sisters' cell phones
No one answered.
Then we called the boys we had hung out with earlier that evening.
No one answered.

Finally, the noises were still happening and we were getting really nervous. One of the girls suggested we call the police. We decided to wait 10 minutes to see if it would just go away. 10 minutes later, after a couple minutes of quiet, we heard what sounded like footsteps.

We did it. We called the police
They answered.

They came and checked everything out and couldn't find anything! The window was open so they assumed it was an animal or something. Regardless, we made it out of the rec room and into the house safely!

Best part: The next morning at breakfast, my parents didn't even believe that the police had been to the house in the middle of the night. It wasn't until we showed them the missed calls on all of their phones that they believed us!!!!

7. Small, tight, dark, airless spaces.
We've discussed this before: Halloween Fears

6. Breaking Humpty Dumpty style.
Breaking my bones isn't too scary. I lost count around 20, you know, that whole OI thing. Please refer to the movie Unbreakable for further details. Samuel L Jackson was way worse off than me, but you get the gist.

Anyway, I'm scared of breaking Humpty Dumpty style. I figure I'll be okay as long as I avoid boxing or the X games.

5. Failure.
School and things like that have always come easily for me. I've been really lucky in that regard. Grad school in a field I've never studied before, sort of intimidating!
4. Angry Dogs
Dogs normally love me and I normally love them. However! Those scary angry mean dogs that charge people from behind their chain link fences. They scare the living daylights out of me!!
3. Sour Milk
I am scared to drink milk anywhere but from my mom's fridge. I always seem to be the one to find sour milk because I never drink it unless I really really am craving it. So then, I pick it up and take a huge gulp, only to find out it's sour. This has happened multiple times and it is incredibly GROSS.
2. Ferris Wheels

Do you see the terror in my eyes and the barely concealed grimace? I'm fine going up high, it's the slow movement and the stopping and starting that kills me!
1. Hurting people's feelings.
I hate hurting people's feelings. Well, obviously a lot of people do. This isn't a quality that makes me unique. You'd probably be a bad person if you enjoyed it. But, it breaks my heart. On occasion it is unavoidable and that's so unfortunate.

10 Day Challenge: Day 2

Day 2 of the Challenge! Nine loves.

These will not be any type of particular order.

9. My family:

As much as they drive me crazy, it really is a blessing to come from such a large family. I have such a network of support, whether I want it or not. :)

My mom is one of 5. My dad is one of 4. I'm one of 4. There are 16 cousins on one side of the family and 11 on the other side.  SO MANY PEOPLE.

It's fun too, now that we're older, the age differences don't seem to matter as much.

And the newest addition to the fam:

Vivi Kitty

8. Water:
For years, I swam on swim team year round.
One of my winter coaches dubbed me with the most awful nickname, Reba, which has stuck, to this day.

Sailing also took over a solid portion of our summers down at Indian Landing.

Most people don't get the Landing. It's sort of a time capsule.

A lot of our parents grew up there, and we've all taken our turns working there.

I spent a summer coaching swim team with Bree & Richard.

It's a boat club, not a yacht club or a marina.

There is a pool, tennis courts, basketball and woods to explore. We spent every summer there.

Every parent was everyone else's parent.

When people ask how I met some of my oldest, closest friends, they are shocked that I didn't meet them in school. To this day, I won't give up my membership.

7. Bright Colors:
Yes, we had an inflatable pool full of play place balls at our house in college.
No explanation necessary.

6. Sequins & Sparkles

5. Storms:
Specifically, that crazy still moment right before a storm.

4. Travel adventures:

3. Books:
The smell of old books.
The way you can get lost in a novel.
Wandering through a library.
Challenging concepts and ideas to tackle.
I could get lost in here for hours.
2. Churches:

Old, elegant Churches with traditional liturgy.
I think my favorite so far is the Duomo in Siena
1. Crabs feasts and Beer:

What can I say? I'm a MD girl at heart!

10 Day Challenge: Day 1

Chelsea over at Life is a Sunset has embarked on a 10 Day challenge, and I thought I might try to do the same.

Day 1, ten secrets. Yikes! I'm going to interpret this liberally and tell you ten things you might not know about me.

10 - I love the Twilight books. I know they are written for preteens. I know they aren't great works of literature. I devoured them.

9 - I used to sneak out. A lot. I never really did anything bad though. We went on vacations to the OBX when I was little. Every night, my cousin, my sister and I would climb out our window and go walking on the beach in the middle of the night. In high school, we'd go to the river and just hang out. Have you noticed the water theme? There's something so perfect about water at night. Especially when the moon jellies are out. I just love them so much.

8- My guiltiest most terrible pleasure in college (yes, I know this is super terrible and so so so bad for me) was to go tanning in the winter time with my best friend, drink a diet coke, and smoke a cigarette. So gross, I know. I've never smoked consistently or gone tanning consistently, but for some reason, that combo of events in the middle of the winter when everything was gray and disgusting out made me happy.

7 - On a snowy day, after going out to play in the snow for a while, my most favorite thing would be to curl up inside and watch Pride and Prejudice - the million hour long, 4 or 5 VHS tapes BBC version.

6- I don't do hot drinks very well. No matter how hard I try, I always either drink them too soon and burn myself.  Or I spill them on me because I carry them around too long waiting for them to cool off. So many of my friends are so healthy and drink tea. Others are glamorous with their coffee. I'll stick to something cold, thank you very much.

5 - I'm 100% addicted to diet coke. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. I drink them with breakfast. I drink them all day at work. People at school know it's a bad night if I show up with a diet coke because I can't sleep if I drink them after 3:30pm!

4- When I was in middle school, my parents (and Grandmother) sent me to Cotillion. They taught me how to ballroom dance and I won two trophies. I also had to take etiquette classes in high school.

3- Yoga, Body Pump, and Swimming are my most favorite workouts. If I don't have someone telling me what to do when, I don't stand a chance at having a productive exercise.

2- I hate when people use derogatory language. When people call each other names, like the B word, the F word, or the C word, it really upsets me. Even when it's not 100% serious.

1- In high school, there were only 4 people in my class, total. We made a CD and called it Senior Moments.

OKAY, I am officially embarrassed. Let's pretend Day One of this challenge never happened!
