To ask or not to ask

Last night, my friend from school, Maribel got engaged!

 (Best Wishes, Maribel!!)

Part of her delightfully romantic proposal story included him letting her know that he had talked to her dad about it.

This struck me as a wonderful way of handling it. It gave her the go ahead that he had checked in with them and they were for it. It showed her that he put thought into planning things and had the courage to ask. A lot of people consider that to be old fashioned these days, but I think it really demonstrates respect. Totally love it!

Thoughts?

Should a guy ask for a blessing or permission? Should he tell the girl he asked or have her assume he did? Would anyone be offended by him asking? Does it hearken back to the days of arranged marriages? What happens if dad says no!?!

  1. I don't think that it is old fashioned. It shows respect to the girl and to her father. If he doesn't ask the father then he is saying that the man who raised her is no longer important, or part of her life anymore. I don't think that is correct. The father raised that girl for x amount of years and the least the boyfriend could do is go and talk to him, state his intentions, and marry the dickens outta that girl.
If the dad says no then you know the holidays will always be interesting. :)
